The city holds significant national importance as the site where Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire was declared on November 28th, 1912. Key attractions in Vlora include the vibrant city center, the Monument of Independence, ancient city walls dating back to the 3rd century BC, a distinguished 15th-century mosque, the main boulevard Vlore-Skele, the historic Kanina Castle, and the remarkable Zvernec Monastery from the 9th century.
