Elbasan is a historic city located in central Albania, renowned as the site of the ancient Illyrian kingdom of Skampa dating back to the first millennium BC. Archaeological excavations indicate that the city walls were reconstructed in the first half of the fourth century AD. In 1466, Sultan Mohammed II rebuilt the fortifications and renamed the town El-Basan, meaning 'the fortress' in Turkish. Visitors can explore the impressive city walls before passing through the Bazaar Gate near the Clock Tower, leading to St. Mary’s and St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Church, both distinguished by their beautiful stone arcades.
